Who we are
This site, The Quiet Amen (oyevox.com), is a personal blog written under the pseudonym “Chief.” It is not operated on behalf of any employer or organization, and no professional or institutional affiliation is implied by anything published here. This policy explains what information is collected from visitors to this site, why, and how it is handled.
Information we collect
Comments. If you leave a comment, the comment form collects your name, email address, and the content of your comment. Your comment, and an approximate date, is also collected. Your IP address and browser user agent string are collected as well, to help with spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. The Gravatar service’s privacy policy is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Contact form. If you use the contact form, the name, email address, and message you provide are sent by email so the request can be answered. This information is not added to any mailing list or stored in a separate database as a result of using the form.
Newsletter signup. If you subscribe using the email field in the site footer, your email address is collected so that new posts or updates can be sent to you. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link included in any email you receive.
Automatically collected data. Like most websites, this site’s hosting provider automatically logs standard technical information for every visitor, such as IP address, browser type, and pages visited, for security and performance purposes.
Cookies
If you leave a comment, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies for convenience, so you do not have to fill them in again. These cookies last for one year.
If you visit the login page, a temporary cookie is used to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie is removed when you close your browser.
This site does not currently run analytics or advertising cookies. If that changes, this policy will be updated to reflect it.
Who this information is shared with
Comments are checked through Akismet, an automated spam-detection service operated by Automattic, which processes the content and metadata of submitted comments to identify spam.
This site is hosted by Hostinger, which processes visitor data as necessary to serve the site and keep it secure.
Information is not sold, rented, or shared with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
How long data is retained
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely, so that follow-up comments can be recognized and approved automatically rather than being held in a moderation queue. Contact form messages are kept only as long as needed to respond to the request. Newsletter email addresses are kept until you unsubscribe.
Your rights over your data
If you have left a comment on this site or contacted it directly, you can request a copy of the personal data held about you, or ask for it to be corrected or deleted, by using the contact form or emailing ochief@icloud.com. This does not include data that must be kept for legal, security, or administrative reasons.
Children’s privacy
This site is not directed at children, and personal information is not knowingly collected from children.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated from time to time, for example as new features are added to the site. The “last updated” date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision.
